AFC Fylde Into The Conference North
AFC Fylde will be playing Conference North football next season after winning promotion courtesy of a hard-fought win over Ashton United in Saturday`s Evo-Stik Northern Premier League Premier Division play-off final at Kellamergh Park.
The bookmakers made Fylde strong favourites before the start of the game. However, it was Ashton United, who finished fifth in the league who took an early 7th minute lead in front of the 1,191 crowd thanks to a long ball forward hit home by Martin Pilkington.
Sean Cooke managed to grab the equaliser after the home side turned up the pressure in the second half, his goal came 20 just minutes left. Fylde were now pushing for a second and Matthew Blinkhorn saw his header go wide of the target. Fylde later hit the bar and Ashton survived extra-time with the help of a shot being cleared off the line to take the tie into penalties. Goalkeeper Ben Hinchliffe was to be the hero, scoring the winning spot-kick to send The Coasters up.
