Biggleswade Win Promotion To Southern Premier

Biggleswade Town Football Club have won promotion to the Evo-Stik Southern League Premier following a 3-1 Division One Central play-off victory against Rugby Town on Bank Holiday Monday.

The Waders needed to come from behind to secure promotion, in front of more than 1,000 spectators at Butlin Road the first half ended goalless and was fairly even.

David Kolodynski put Rugby in the lead on 58 minutes when he hit a delightful chip over Goalkeeper Michael McEntegart. Rugby, who finished the season in second place, were now looking dangerous but five minutes later Biggleswade hit back when the referee awarded a penalty on his assistants advice. Lee Allinson stepped up and fired home from the spot.

Chances fell to both teams but it was the Waders who made the late breakthrough, with five minutes left. Paul Barnes rifled home from 18 yards after Joel Mason had hit the ball across the box, sending the Waders fans went crazy.

The goal left the Rugby players heartbroken and with Iwediuno and Donnelly combining well down the left Barnes again found the net to make it 3-1.

Manager Chris Nunn was delighted with his team’s performance and said after the match: “With ten minutes to go I wanted to win the game. So I took off a midfielder and put on a striker to go more up front and try and win it. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t but today it did.”

The win means Biggleswade Town will celebrate their 140th year by playing in the Southern League Premier and can look forward to some mouth-watering local fixtures including the likes of St Neots Town, Arlesey Town and Hitchin Town.
