Hatters Complete Paul Benson Signing

Luton Town have completed the signing of 33-year-old Swindon Town striker Paul Benson on loan until the end of the season. The Hatters beat off competition from a number of Football League clubs to bring Benson to Kenilworth Road.

Having scored 111 career goals with the likes of Dagenham & Redbridge, Charlton Athletic, Swindon Town, Portsmouth and Cheltenham Town, Benson joins Luton on a loan deal with the view to make the transfer permanent.

Benson signed at Dagenham & Redbridge on 1st July 2005 after being unearthed by current Hatters boss John Still whilst the striker was playing Non-league football for White Ensign, where he had scored 107 goals in 65 games in all competitions for the Essex League side. However Benson’s first season with the Daggers was frustrating, he was out of the side for three months with a broken leg and only scored one goal.

The frontman helped the Daggers win the Conference title in 2006-07 finished the season as both club and Conference top scorer with 28 goals. He went on to notch 82 goals whilst with the Daggers, including a goal at Wembley as Dagenham defeated Rotherham United in the play-offs to clinch a place in Football League One.

His form alerted the attentions of a number of other clubs and on the 31st August 2010 Benson signed for League One rivals Charlton Athletic. He scored 10 goals after making 27 appearances for the Addicks. A move to Notts County collapsed after they failed to agree personal terms but he joined Paulo Di Canio’s Swindon in January 2012.

He scored 12 goals for Di Canio’s side, the Robins were crowned champions of League Two in the process, but following their promotion to League One, Paul found regular place in the first team hard to come by and was loaned to League One side Portsmouth and League Two club Cheltenham last season.
